In 2024, Médecins Sans Frontières launched a multidisciplinary rehabilitative care project for survivors of violence and ill-treatment in Kazakhstan.
The project, set up in the city of Almaty, in collaboration with local partners, focuses on mental health services, medical referrals and health education for vulnerable groups. This includes the Kandastar community, ethnic Kazakhs who have returned to Kazakhstan after years or even generations of living abroad, primarily in countries such as China, Mongolia and Uzbekistan.
Many Kandastar returnees face challenges integrating into society in Kazakhstan or suffer from mental health problems that developed during their emigrant life. In response, we started to provide them with individual mental health support and psychoeducation sessions, to help them cope with stress, trauma and adjustment difficulties.
Our team is working to strengthen their resilience by providing psychosocial support and promoting community-based support and mental health awareness among the Kandastar. We aim to reduce the trauma faced by them, and ensure they receive the care and support necessary to rebuild their lives.

Given the poor road infrastructure, extreme weather conditions severely limit people’s access to health centers and make it difficult for our teams to reach communities. A situation that often demotivates people to visit health centers before their condition worsens.

Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF) officially launched medical activities in the equatorial Pacific island nation of Kiribati in October 2022. Our team there, including a paediatrician, midwife and general practitioner, support the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

“Kiribati has one of the highest burdens of disease in the world, including the highest incidence of leprosy, one of the highest of TB and diabetes; and some of the lowest access to primary healthcare. There are clear needs here that are not being met,” says Alison Jones, MSF’s medical coordinator for Kiribati. On top of that, the environmental issues are significant, and growing.

Kiribati is among the most climate-vulnerable places on earth. Along with erosion, the salinisation of underground water sources and soil, warmer air temperatures, more frequent ‘king tides’ and drought are increasing.

The climate crisis is a health crisis: human health is dependent on the health and sustainability of the environment. Nowhere is this more evident than for people living within the constraints of an island.

Seventy-five percent of deaths in the Pacific region are due to NCDs, and NCDs are now recognised as the leading cause of health problems in Kiribati. The rates of diabetes in Kiribati are high and increasing.

“Diabetes in pregnant women is of particular concern as the condition can be high risk for mums and babies, who require access to secondary (specialist) care for management during labour, delivery, and after birth,” says MSF’s project medical referent in Kiribati, midwife Sandra Sedlmaier-Ouattara.

MSF’s work in Kiribati aims initially to improve diabetes detection and management and hypertension related to maternal health in the Southern Gilbert Islands, based at Tabiteuea North

Youssef Al-Khishawi, an MSF water and sanitation agent, helps children carry water to their tent in the Tal Al-Sultan area of the southern Gaza town of Rafah, on January 27, 2024.
He says: “In a normal situation, one person needs two to three liters of drinking water per day. Now, with the current shortage, the average for one family of six is one gallon of water (3.8 litres).”

“The main challenge we face in distributing water is the lack of fuel to pump and transport it,” says Al-Khishawi. “The second is the lack of proper roads for our trucks to drive on, because there are tents even on the asphalt. The third is that there are no water distribution points – even they have been bombed. Water pipes, streets and infrastructures are destroyed.”
