Tripling the number of children admitted while keeping the same level of care... that’s a recurrent challenge for MSF teams in Niger. The rainy season corresponds to the lean season, therefore malaria and malnutrition peak coincides. For children in particular, it is the most difficult period of the year and represents a real fight for survival.
This chronicle crisis is being prepared months in advance. This year, MSF strategy has been to open an autonomous pediatric unit in Dungass, two hours ride from Magaria city. Thanks to this center, the hospital bed capacity for children in the region has been scaled up to 700 beds. The fully functioning hospital, built in a few months on a stretch of sand, successfully managed to function as a buffer during the peak. More than 200 staff, essential medical doctors and nurses, have been recruited and trained.
In September 2016 only, about 2500 children were admitted in MSF supported hospitals of Magaria region.

أفادت منظمة أطباء بلا حدودأن المستشفى الوحيد المتخصص برعاية الأطفال في منطقة شرق حلب المحاصرة تعرض للهجوم للمرة الثانية على التوالي منذ استئناف الغارات الجوية في 15 نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني، ما تسبب بتدمير ثلاثة طوابق وتعطيل المستشفى. تحديث حول مشروع - 19 نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني 2016

In an unfinished concrete skeleton of a building eight families live in tents of plastic sheeting. They have lived there for one year and eight months, since fighting began in Taiz. They cook over a fire of cardboard and plastic, or eating leftovers they get from nearby restaurants. The women walk over to a factory a bit away to get water from there. Only one of the adults is working, washing cars. The MSF outreach team is checking children for malnutrition and other diseases and refers them to the MSF Mother and Child hospital if necessary. Apart from regular visits from the MSF team, the only assistance they have gotten was a distribution of soap six months ago.

قصف المستشفيات في حلب الشرقيّة يجبر الإطار الطبي على نقل الأطفال المرضى إلى القبو لحمايتهم من القصف

تؤكد منظمة أطباء بلا حدود أنباء تعرض مستشفيين في حلب الشرقية المحاصرة لغارات جوية يوم 16 نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني، وذلك بعد يومٍ من استئناف القصف الجوي الذي يستهدف هذا الجزء من حلب الخاضع للمعارضة. تحديث حول مشروع - 17 نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني 2016

More than 300 people arrive each day in Nduta camp, originally designed for 50,000 people but now hosting over 65,000. New arrivals come by bus, first crossing the border point, then to transit camps and and then staying a few nights in the camp reception centre on arrival to Nduta. While they are being registered by UNHCR and before a family shelter is allocated to them, they live in overcrowded communal tents, facing poor hygiene and a high risk of malaria transmission.
New arrivals have to queue for hours in the reception centre to receive their daily meals. Some of these people have already been allocated a shelter, but have not received their refugee card and dry food rations. They have to come back every day to the reception centre to get a warm meal.
MSF is present at the reception centre to screen all new arrivals. “A lot of them arrive exhausted and in bad health condition. We do their medical check-up and send those in need to MSF clinics or refer them to the hospital. They also get vaccinated and pregnant women are scheduled for antenatal consultations.”
Medical teams have seen a big increase in the number of consultations, both at the reception centres and in MSF’s four health posts and hospital. The number of deliveries has risen as well. “When I arrived a few weeks ago, there were around five deliveries per day. Now we have around 12,” says Sally Parker, midwife.
