A boat taking MSF staff to the rural area of Portel travels through a river in the Brazilian Northern state of Pará. MSF is supporting local authorities in order to improve healthcare access to the town’s population. Portel has dealt historically with a lack of health professionals and facilities, particularly in hard-to-reach remote areas which are home to vulnerable river dweller communities.

MSF mobile mental health staff conducts a counseling session in Mullaitivu district. Numerous communities in areas affected by the fighting witnessed deeply traumatic events that took place during the last phase of the civil war. While the physical scars may have healed for many, significant mental health care needs remain. Many lost everything during the war and face new difficulties in the resettlement process. Drawing on extensive experience of working in conflict and post-conflict settings, MSF launched mental health activities in 2009, first in Menik Farm ? a camp for thousands of people displaced by the war ? and later in eight different sites in Mullaitivu district. As patients were unable to travel to health facilities due to a lack of public transport and money, mobile teams had to travel to very remote areas to conduct sessions. In August 2012, MSF handed over the mental health programme - its last remaining activity in the country.
