Amina*, 22, fled El Fasher, North Darfur state, Sudan, after fighting intensified between armed groups. Twelve members of her family were killed in a drone strike, including her parents, husband, and siblings. While escaping with her children, she was raped by armed men. Today she cares for her own children and four nieces and nephews. “Sometimes we spend the whole day and night without eating,” she says. “I never told anyone about the rape. Never. I have just been patient. I wish I could forget what happened to me.” *A pseudonym has been used to protect her identity.

Amina Tahila (27), a new mother,reaches her home in Shinkafi town after being discharged. “I am happy that I was taken to the hospital. And both my baby girl and I are doing fine now. I am grateful and I am wishing others well. Whoever is pregnant needs help.  I am advising women to please take good  care of themselves. They should always go to the hospital for care because  the hospital takes care of people. “ MSF covers several needs of the pregnant women coming to give birth —from food and medicine to surgery when needed. Transport is also provided, both to the hospital and back to their communities

Multiple babies share one incubator in the neonatal intensive care unit of Al Helou hospital north Gaza because of a lack of incubators. Having babies sharing one incubator highly increases the chances of infection. The immune system of newborns, especially premature ones, is not yet developed.

Sameera Abkir, 25, is examined by MSF doctors at the Romalia mobile clinic in West Darfur. She developed an arm infection due to a poorly administered injection following a home delivery. January 2025.
 12 days after giving birth at home, she visited the Romalia mobile clinic to have both her baby and herself checked. She arrived with her husband on a cart pulled by a donkey. Upon arrival, she was running a high fever and had a wound on her arm. She explained that following the home delivery, she had experienced severe abdominal pain, and her brother had purchased a medication for her, which was injected into her arm. She had pain in her arm and she couldn’t hold her baby properly. After conducting several tests, the doctors at the clinic discovered an infection in her arm. They promptly disinfected and dressed the wound and prescribed antibiotics for treatment.

Khadija*, a mother from Gaza, believed her family was in a safe place—until the tanks arrived. In an instant, a shell exploded between them, leaving her son severely injured. At the hospital, she held back tears as her son asked, "Mama, why are they covering Baba’s eyes?" Her husband was gone. Her son, in shock, didn’t speak for 10 days. Palestinian artist Safaa Odah, who also survived the war in Gaza, channels the grief and terror that mothers in Gaza have endured since October 7, 2023. Through her art, she captures the unrelenting cycle of loss that countless Palestinian families continue to face.
