In late March 2014, MSF inaugurated a post-operative care unit in Zaatari refugee camp, northeast of Amman. The space was opened as a step-down overflow facility for war-wounded Syrians referred from MSF’s Ramtha surgical project and other Jordanian hospitals to receive long-term rehabilitative and convalescent care. Jordan’s stringent decision to seal its borders with Syria completely on 21 June denied war-wounded Syrians access to Jordan. Despite the intensification of fighting between warring parties in southern Syria, Jordanian borders remain tightly sealed, leaving the severely-wounded Syrians and lifesaving cases with very slim chances to survive. Today, MSF’s facility in Zaatari stands nearly empty despite the growing medical needs at the other side of the Jordanian borders. To this end, MSF has regrettably decided to end all operations in its Zaatari facility while the number of war-wounded mounts behind the closed borders.

Damaged hospital car The last two functional ambulances in Al-Marj neighbourhood (in the East Ghouta besieged area near Damascus) were destroyed beyond repair in an aerial bomb attack on Monday 05 December 2016. They were parked in the hospital’s warehouse/garage, very near to the makeshift hospital’s location. Two hospital cars, used to transporting supplies and medical personnel, were also destroyed in the blast. The lack of ambulances will have an impact on the ability to quickly treat wounded when there is bombing or shelling in the area, but above all it will affect the capacity to refer the most sick patients to larger secondary referral hospitals. The makeshift hospital in Al-Marj is not equipped for complex or long-term in-patient hospital care, and this could have a big impact on the ability to refer patients for appropriate secondary care.

In an unfinished concrete skeleton of a building eight families live in tents of plastic sheeting. They have lived there for one year and eight months, since fighting began in Taiz. They cook over a fire of cardboard and plastic, or eating leftovers they get from nearby restaurants. The women walk over to a factory a bit away to get water from there. Only one of the adults is working, washing cars. The MSF outreach team is checking children for malnutrition and other diseases and refers them to the MSF Mother and Child hospital if necessary. Apart from regular visits from the MSF team, the only assistance they have gotten was a distribution of soap six months ago.
