Next-generation sequencing (NGS) machine in the MSF managed laboratory in Nukus. NGS is a new technique which allows to analyse every gene in TB bacteria DNA. This technique provides information on mutations of resistance to TB drugs.

MSF renovated and equipped a mycobacteriological laboratory biosafety level 3 in Nukus and introduced advanced rapid TB diagnostics technologies. The laboratory has the capacity for conducting culture tests, drug sensitivity tests and sputum smear quality control. The laboratory carries out the second-line drug sensitivity tests (DST). Introduction of NGS is also planned for Nukus laboratory.

On 15 February, in collaboration with the Turkish Medical Association, a team from Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) donated various essential relief items to people affected by the earthquake in the city of Adiyaman in southern Türkiye.

The donated items – including hygiene kits, electrical stoves, winter undergarments, nappies and baby food – were distributed to more than 50 families at a newly established camp for earthquake survivors.

The city of Adiyaman, with a population of around 300,000, was one of the areas worst hit by the earthquake. Large numbers of buildings were damaged or are considered unsafe to return, leaving thousands of people sleeping in the open, in large camps, makeshift settlements or private cars.

As in other quake-affected areas, MSF teams are coordinating with various local organisations to provide assistance to survivors.

Dr Iza Jikia (left) Dr Nino Dzidzikashvili (centre) review an DR-TB patient’s chest X-ray at the National Centre for Tuberculosis and Lung Disease in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi. In Dr Jikia’s opinion, new TB drugs are making patients more optimistic about recovering from drug-resistant forms of the disease: “Of course the patients count on these medicines more than the medicines they used to take previously, because they can see better results.”

She adds that DR-TB remains a very complex disease to treat, highlighting the need for simpler and more user-friendly treatments in the future: “this disease is like a dragon with nine heads and we have to execute all nine heads. If we miss even one it will develop again. For this you need to be strong.”
