The MSF hospital in Agok is the only facility providing secondary care in the entire Abyei region of South Sudan. This structure deals with emergencies, surgeries, treatments of HIV, tuberculosis, chronic diseases as well as neglected diseases, such as snake bites, a real scourge in the region. In 2019, in order to improve the quality of care, a radiology room was set up and the pharmacy was extended. A lack of specialized structures in the surrounding states forces some patients to travel very long distances to get to Agok hospital, some have to walk for up to 10 hours. This phenomenon illustrates the need for a comprehensive hospital in a country where health care is almost non-existent

Amina*, 22, fled El Fasher, North Darfur state, Sudan, after fighting intensified between armed groups. Twelve members of her family were killed in a drone strike, including her parents, husband, and siblings. While escaping with her children, she was raped by armed men. Today she cares for her own children and four nieces and nephews. “Sometimes we spend the whole day and night without eating,” she says. “I never told anyone about the rape. Never. I have just been patient. I wish I could forget what happened to me.” *A pseudonym has been used to protect her identity.

This package brings together six testimonies from patients inside Nasser Hospital who are awaiting medical evacuation from Gaza, three mothers speaking about their children’s critical conditions and three adults in need of lifesaving treatment abroad. Documenting the struggle of patients who can no longer access essential medical care due to the collapse of Gaza’s health system due to the Genocide. More than 18,500 people, including thousands of children, are registered for evacuation; many others remain uncounted because they cannot reach health facilities. According to Ministry of Health (MOH) records, 1,092 patients died while awaiting medical evacuation between July 2024 and November 28, 2025. However, this figure is likely underreported, as it is based solely on reported deaths. These testimonies highlight the urgent need for a permanent medical evacuation mechanism, and unhindered humanitarian access so patients can receive the care they need—and eventually return home safely.
