More than 500 people are now safely onboard Aquarius, a search and rescue vessel run by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and SOS MEDITERRANEE, but an unknown number of people are missing presumed drowned after a gruelling day of rescues in the Mediterranean. Louma, a community volunteer with MSF, ensures buckets are clean and water is purified as people from the internally displaced and refugee sites pump water from the well. Having a volunteer at the water pump ensures that waterborne diseases are not easily spread throughout the community.

Ain Issa camp, Syria, September, 2017. The camp, situated in about sixty kilometers of Raqqa, welcomes 15 000 people fleeing the fights in the cities of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor. We esteem at 10 000 the number of civilians surrounded inside the city of Raqqa. In September, 80 to 90 % of the newcomers came from Deir Ezzor zone.

Innocente, 33 years old, is a Doctor in a Hospital 45 km away from Tamatave, where MSF is supporting the local hospital.

“For five days, I was really tired; I had aches, headaches and chest pain. I thought I was suffering from angina. On 5 October, I had an alarming symptom: I started spitting blood. As I had done training about pneumonic plague with some colleagues, I went to Tamatave’s hospital to do some tests. I was clearly a suspect case, and then they confirmed that I was infected by the plague. I got an injection and stayed at the hospital. My family was panicked. From the second day, the symptoms began to disappear: swollen glands, headaches etc… As I was feeling better, I began to help the medical staff here even though I was still recovering. There were a lot of patients, a lot of plague cases the first week of the epidemic. Now, it has slowed down. The medical staff told me to take two weeks off to rest. I don’t know if my family is ready for me to come back home. They say they are but I can feel that they’re still afraid of me. So I stay away to leave my family in peace. I’m feeling positive. I don’t want to live with this secret: I had the plague and I was cured.”

Once a week MSF mobile medical teams serve the small settlement south of the town of Tuz Kurmato in Salaheddin governorate where 4000 displaced people have been living for the last year and a half after their village, a few miles away, became engulfed in violent fighting. Female and male medical staff provide general health care with special focus on chronic diseases, mother and child care as well as mental health support. The community is afraid to travel around in this highly militarized area, particularly men, and are reluctant to see medical care in close by urban settlement such as Tuz Kurmato or Kirkuk.

10,000 people displaced by the fighting that erupted last week in Batangafo (north of Central African Republic) are still sheltering in the compound of the hospital managed by MSF. The teams there have tried to improve water provision, sanitation and hygiene conditions. The displaced people were forced out of the camp in which they were sheltering after it was looted and burned down during the fighting.
The hospital is considered just one of a handful of “safe spaces” left in Batangafo. MSF calls on those organisations responsible to facilitate the necessary conditions to ensure the safe return of the people to the camp. 11 people died, and nine wounded individuals were treated by MSF teams.

SPA
Alrededor de diez mil personas, desplazadas por los violentos enfrentamientos de la semana pasada en Batangafo, (en el norte de la República Centroafricana), siguen refugiadas en el recinto del hospital de la ciudad, gestionado por MSF. Los equipos están tratando de mejorar las condiciones de higiene y provisión de agua y saneamiento en la zona. La comunidad tuvo que huir del campo de desplazados en el que se refugiaban debido a la violencia. Buena parte del campo fue saqueado y posteriormente incendiado.

El hospital es considerado como uno de los escasos lugares seguros en Batangafo: MSF hace un llamamiento para que se faciliten las condiciones necesarias para el retorno con seguridad de los refugiados en el recinto hospitalario al campo de desplazados.
