"If we compare before and after MSF started bringing malaria drugs, there is a big difference. All the children who got the medicine have not had malaria again. Only the children who did not get the drugs are getting sick.” says Arual

South Sudan is at the middle of the malaria season. The majority of patients at Mayen Abun Hospital are positive for malaria, some of them suffering from severe cases.

As this is a recurring situation, MSF has been running a mass drug administration (MDA) rounds since 2023, providing prophylactic treatment to children under the age of 15.

This has already had a massive impact on the community: positive rates among children are much lower than in previous years (even though the country as a whole is experiencing an increased malaria peak compared to previous years due to the influx of refugees and flooding), and the rate of severe cases is also much lower.

An MSF outreach team visited one IDP camp to check some of the children who had already received 3 rounds of prophylaxis and to discuss the impact with the families.

Reports indicate strikes on homes, hospitals, schools, and universities in residential areas where families with children live. At least 8 people were reportedly killed during last night, including a six-year-old child, and more than 100 injured — among them, children.
In recent months, attacks on Kyiv have become more frequent. Since the full-scale invasion by Russian forces in 2022, many people have come to the city seeking safety — now, even here, they are at risk. Kyiv is also home to major hospitals that provide specialised care. Patients with serious or complex medical needs are often transferred here from other parts of the country. Attacks on the city put both this care and the people who depend on it in danger.

“MSF in Ukraine is witnessing the devastating, continuous impact of intensified airstrikes on cities and residential areas across the country,” says Ainur Absemetova, MSF’s Head of Mission. “These attacks not only destroy homes and essential infrastructure like schools, hospitals, power and water systems — they also undermine people’s sense of safety and dignity, leaving them in a constant state of fear and uncertainty. This ongoing terror intensifies existing trauma, deepens insecurity, anxiety and increases the urgent need for emergency medical and psychological support.”

The Walikale general reference hospital is the only referral hospital in Walikale territory, North Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. In cases of serious complications or rare or unusual diseases/illnesses, Médecins Sans Frontières refers patients by helicopter to Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu.

In April 2025, after nearly a year of suspended activities, MSF returned to Macomia town to resume medical support. MSF teams now assist the Ministry of Health at the main health center and carries out regular assessments in camps for internally displaced people to better understand and respond to the community’s needs.
