The routine use of antibiotics in the treatment of severe acute malnutrition has minimal impact on the likelihood of recovery, according to a major study of more than 2,000 children by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and its research arm Epicentre, published today in The New England Journal of Medicine. Between 600 and 620 families are living in the Fariya camp. (=3600 people). 1070 children under 5. Unofficial camp. Until our intervention, they had very little support. Latrines ACF, shleter by IOM. Most people are shuwa arab (ethnic group) coming from Marte. ACF just open an OPD on Monday. This was our second distribution there. 300 living in 150 IOM shelters (2 families in 1 shelter). Others live in makeshift tents. People have been here for 10 months more or less. 3 boreholes but only 1 working solar

No hope of returning home anytime soon

Over 30,000 people have taken refuge in churches and schools and overcrowded, unsanitary makeshift camps across the capital Bangui. Renewed outbreaks of inter-communal violence is keeping the population on edge, and has crushed any hope of returning home any time soon. I tried to call my bureau chief, but everyone was saying, please don’t call us. We cannot help you. Even my dearest friends, they refused to help me. I contacted so many embassies, so many human right organizations, I sent so many emails to my journalist friends, my life was in danger and nobody was able to protect me. What can I say. I couldn’t get a visa. The only way was to contact that human smuggler. It has been the most dangerous and painful journey of my life. I never faced this hardship in my life before and I never lived in these conditions. Sometimes I felt people were not accepting me. I’m 51 years old and I worked 25 years as a journalist. Like me, many journalists in Pakistan are suffering. Journalists have been killed in Pakistan as a result of their work. My wife obliged me to go away. Now my family is hidden at the border with India. I left there my two sons and three daughters. I miss them too much that if I think about them I start crying.”

"The living conditions in the sites are very difficult. They live in tents built of waste tarpaulins that are full of holes," says Reims Pali, MSF Assistant Field Coordinator in CAR."They sleep on mats on the ground and are exposed to mosquitoes which may carry malaria. Children suffering from malaria receive anti-malarial drugs that they must take for 3 days and, if they are malnourished, several doses of an edible read-to-use nutritious paste that makes them put on weight. Children in less serious condition go back home and return to the health centre a week later to make sure the treatment is working. Les enfants souffrant de paludisme reçoivent un anti-paludéen qu’ils doivent prendre pendant 3 jours et, si ils sont malnutris, plusieurs doses de pâte nutritive prête à l’emploi qui fait grossir. Les cas moins graves rentrent chez eux et reviennent au centre après une semaine pour s’assurer que le traitement se passe bien.
