MSF teams descend the High Plateau area on their way back from Numbi.
Numbi is a small town located 2,000 meters above the sea level, in one of the most remote areas of the South Kivu province. All the provisions for the local community have to be carried on foot or delivered by motorbikes. During the rainy season roads become impassable, even for off-road vehicles.

The Rohingya: No country to call home

After losing her mother to MDR-TB five years ago, Ankita Parab learned that she too was infected with the disease, and endured years of arduous treatment. Later, her brother also fell ill with MDR-TB. In 2016, when her brother’s condition worsened, his doctor referred him to MSF’s TB clinic in Mumbai, India, where he was quickly started on a treatment regimen that included newer TB drugs. Ankita was also tested for TB through contact tracing, one of the preventive services MSF offers to all family members living with people with TB. The results were a terrible shock for her. Despite her earlier treatment, Ankita had developed XDR-TB – the most severe form of the disease. With support from her family, friends and MSF medical staff and counsellors, Ankita completed her two years of XDR-TB treatment with MSF in May 2018 and was declared cured. Follow-up testing in November 2018 confirmed there was no relapse or recurrence of TB.

The old man on the left has had a festering hole in the head for 3 years. He has had his wound cleaned and his bandage dressed every three days for a year at the Old Fangak hospital. A discussion begins between Florence (right) the medical director, the surgeon Gilles (out of frame) and Julie Malcolm Wyzyloski, the nurse of the operating room to know if a surgical intervention is desirable. The conclusion will be that there is nothing to do but cure the symptom for fear of triggering a fatal process. So far, the patient does not suffer.

The Americas

The newly renovated Intensive Care unit in Sulaymaniyah Emergency Hospital was opened the 19 November after a complete reconstruction done by MSF. Sulaymaniyah Emergency Hospit is the only trauma facility in Sulaymaniyah Governorate treating all people with acute medical and surgical illness. Over the last two years, there has been a significant rise in the hospital’s catchment population (currently over 2.5 million people) due to the influx of internally displaced persons from neighbouring conflict zones. MSF has been working in Sulaymaniyah Emergency Hospital since January 2016, with the aim to reduce patient mortality rate by improving quality of care in both the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Emergency Department (ER). This is done through improved quality of patient care and structural renovation of the ER & ICU medical facilities.

The year in review

In 2018 Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams provided medical and humanitarian assistance to people facing extreme hardship in over 70 countries.

Emergency response continued to be a core part of our work in 2018: from treating war-wounded ever closer to frontlines in Yemen; responding to epidemic outbreaks such as Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo and cholera in Niger; providing assistance to people fleeing violence in the Central African Republic and Central America; treating visible and invisible wounds around the world and making every effort to improve patient care wherever we work.

Villages or towns across the region are informed of MSF’s visits in advance and notify smaller, neighbouring communities of the arrival of doctors and psychologists. The teams spend two or three days in each community.
