A boat taking MSF staff to the rural area of Portel travels through a river in the Brazilian Northern state of Pará. MSF is supporting local authorities in order to improve healthcare access to the town’s population. Portel has dealt historically with a lack of health professionals and facilities, particularly in hard-to-reach remote areas which are home to vulnerable river dweller communities.

MSF OCBA carried out an exploratory mission in Argelia from the 29th of January to the 23rd of February 2007. The main objective was to asses in situ the health situation of the SSI ( Sub-Saharan Immigrants) in transit on their way to Europe, including the response to this problematic from the national authorities and international actors. The arrival of SSIs is affecting several countries in the north of Africa, including Argelia, as this countries represent the entry door to Europe. This is not a new phenomenon in Argelia, as this country is traditionally a place where SSI transit in their way to Europe since many years ago. However, reports show an increase in the number of people arriving despite all the efforts done to stop their entry in the country. We can estimate that the current population of SSI in transit to Europe in Argelia is between 21,000 and 30,000 people (there are numbers that go up to 300,000)

Algeria

Paulina Cassombu has been in Cuvango Municipal Hospital, in southwestern Angola, with her daughter, Rosa, for three weeks. Rosa was admitted with severe malnutrition and was covered in painful blisters and could not walk for a long period of time. Now, as she got better, and with the help of psychostimulation sessions, has been able to regain her mobility.
“She came in with a lot of blisters. She is much better now and it makes me happy,” said Paulina.
Both in Cuvango and Chipindo Municipal Hospitals, through psychostimulation sessions, psychologists have worked to re-establish mobility, cognition, confidence, and mother to child bond after a child has been in a critical condition in the hospital for an extended period.

On April 5, MSF Mission in Armenia and partners inaugurated a new service for testing and treatment for Hepatitis C virus (HCV) within our existing project in Arshakunyats Health Center, in the capital Yerevan. The service is part of a project launched in 2023 by MSF in Armenia to provide access for testing and treatment of Hepatitis C following a “one stop shop” approach. The new service thus aims at improving access to Hepatitis C care for key populations (“PWID” People who Inject Drugs, ”MSM” Men who have Sex with Men, “CSW” Commercial Sex Workers), as the existing health services are not always tailored to meet the needs of this group.

Armenia

MSF first worked in Armenia in 1988 to respond to medical needs following the Spitak earthquake.
