Jean Louis is in his twenties but is already scarred by a conflict that has turned Delmas 4, once one of the main commercial and industrial areas of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, into a battleground for competing armed groups. The violence that has been intensifying and spreading across larger parts of the capital keeps the population locked in neighbourhoods that the Ministry of Health staff are fearful to access because of the insecurity they face. “Last night the gunfire went off again around 2:00 a.m., no one could sleep”, says Jean Louis. “This time a wave of tear gas was also unleashed. We could hardly breathe. There is an unstoppable war going on between two armed groups from Bel Air and Delmas 4. When the shooting begins, people start running to seek cover where they feel more secure”, he says pointing to his haven, a tiny space under the only bed in the small room. “It did not used to be like this. It used to be very peaceful around here, that was before the fighting erupted on 6 June 2021”, he recalls.

In Mumane, a community near the city of Montepuez, more than 500 newly displaced families received MSF’s relief items kits. Since June, it is estimated that violence has driven over 80,000 (according to OCHA) people out of their homes in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado. People fleeing violence have been on the move and often settle near communities with little to no means of livelihood. MSF is providing emergency assistance to new arrivals by distributing kits with essential relief items. MSF logistics and supply teams work around the clock to coordinate with multiple actors, organize the kits and provide a timely and comprehensive response. To this date, more than 4,000 families that have been displaced from heavy-hit locations in the province, such as Ancuabe, have benefitted from the kits in 9 localities in the province, such as Montepuez, Metuge and Meluco.

Wide shot of an MSF staff during an emergency medical aid response in Samos island, Greece. Since August 2021, MSF has been responding to requests for emergency medical assistance to people arriving by boat on the island of Samos. This activity was stopped in November 2021 and resumed in January 2022. MSF is providing emergency medical and psychological first aid as well as emergency referrals to the hospital, distribution of food kits, water and dry clothes. In total, MSF has provided emergency assistance to more than 550 people on 41 occasions in Samos.
