A hospital worker salvages the remains of undamaged medication and equipment left in the emergency room after the 15 August Saudi-led coalition airstrike which destroyed the hospital killing 19. In a country where access to healthcare is already extremely limited, the Abs hospital was the only facility catering to over 2,000 IDPs in the area and thousands more along the coast, from the northwestern border of Yemen to the outskirts of Hodeidah. With the destruction of Abs hospital, the closest hospital is now over 3 hours drive away.

" I registered my mother as a patient at MSF’s clinic in Irbid. A medical team pays her home visits each month for a medical check-up as she’s physically unable to get to the clinic." - Muwaffaq Mreish, 51-year old Syrian patient. On 15 December 2014, MSF launched its non-communicable diseases (NCDs) project in two clinics located in Irbid governorate, near the closed borders with Syria. Both clinics continue to provide free-of-charge quality medical treatment to Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanians suffering from chronic diseases, in addition to psychosocial support sessions which were introduced in April 2016.

Since February 2015, the region of Diffa, in Niger, has become the target of attacks by the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP), also known as Boko Haram. The continuous violence has caused an exodus of more than 300,000 people. For months, the displaced population has settled around main cities and villages of Diffa, Nguigmi and Bosso districts, as well as in makeshift camps along the RN1 road that connects Diffa with Niamey, the capital of Niger. They are living in very precarious conditions. The majority are fishermen or farmers but, for security reasons, the Niger authorities have banned their access to the banks of the Komadougou river, where they carried out all their activity. In this context, MSF is working to support several health centres in the region, as well as the main maternal and child centre in the city of Diffa and the Nguigmi district hospital. MSF is also providing medical care in several displacement camps and sites.

An MSF staff helps a young boy cross the swamps at dusk with his family to Kok Island after receiving for the first time in many month food distribution in the troubled Unity State in South Sudan. Kok Island is the home to over two thousand IDP's who have fled the fighting in their home areas. In April 2015 after a rise in fighting in Unity State, thousands of civilians were forced to flee into the bush, swamps or into the UN Protection of Civilian site in Bentiu.

Conditions inside the detention centres do not meet any national, regional or international standards. They are dangerously overcrowded with a lack of natural light and ventilation. In some facilities, the amount of space per detainee is so limited (as little as 0.41m2 per person) that people are unable to stretch out at night, resulting in many complaints of body aches.
