MSF teams provide mental health support for people who have fled intense shelling in the south and east of Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of people are now internally displaced in shelters in Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia. Many people have lost their homes, lost friends and family, and are now separated from loved ones. People suffer from a range of mental health issues, including intesnse fear and anxiety, chronic stress, insomnia and constant worry. MSF mobile teams visit people staying in shelters across the country in order to treat the pyscholgical issues people are facing.

Kenya

Malnutrition remains high as drought continues in Kenya

An ongoing drought in northeast Kenya is raging on following three consecutive seasons of failed rains. Marsabit County is reporting high or above-usual rates of acute malnutrition. Project Update - 20 May 2022
 
Roughly 200 people from two boats in distress were rescued on the morning of May 9. Everyone is now safe on board the Geo Barents while we continue the search for more boats in distress. Right after the rescue we saw the Libyan Coast Guard navigating at a very close distance from the Geo Barents.
Mediterranean migration

After seven rescues from the central Mediterranean, 470 people need a place of safety

MSF teams conducted seven rescue operations from the central Mediterranean within 72 hours during which 470 people were rescued and brought upon the Geo Barents. The survivors need a safe place to disembark. Project Update - 16 May 2022
 
Juliette walking on the streets of Ambodrian i’Sahafary a village only accessible by boat where MSF set-up a moblie clinic. Juliette, 23, is pregnant and the mother of two children aged 5 and 2. She is a rice, coffee and pepper farmer. 
Juliette lives in the "fokontany" (neighbourhood) of Ambodiriana, an hour's walk from the Ambodirian'i Sahafary health centre, where she came for a medical consultation. 
Her house and those of her neighbours were ravaged by the cyclone Batsirai. His rice, coffee and pepper crops were also destroyed. Normally, the rice was to be harvested in April. 
She says: "During the cyclone, we took refuge in a smaller house because the larger ones were blown away. The wind blew violently, and we were not able to anticipate the consequences by reinforcing the houses, nor by storing food. 

Without money, we can't do anything. If health care wasn't free, we wouldn't go to the doctor. You do the doctor yourself."

Attacks on medical care

Four months on, an ongoing nightmare for MSF colleagues detained in South-West Cameroon

Four MSF staff members have been arrested and detained in South-West Cameroon. MSF suspended activities in South-West Cameroon in March because of the detention of our colleagues and has been engaging with the Cameroonian authorities for their release. Project Update - 28 Apr 2022
 
The catastrophic flash flooding that ensued on 11 April in the eThekwini region in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province has left 40,000 people homeless and many are sheltering in community-based schools, churches and halls without food, cookware, mattresses, blankets, clothes and basic hygiene products. MSF has provided kits comprising these non-food items to more than 500 individuals, and to free shelter residents from dependence on food packs MSF has equipped three community shelters with kitchenware including stoves, fridges and freezers.
South Africa

Thousands homeless and at risk of disease after devastating floods

Around 40,000 people have been left homeless after floods in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa ripped apart homes, leaving many people vulnerable to water-borne diseases. Project Update - 22 Apr 2022
 
MSF team walk in Al-Fawwar camp, Hebron governorate, Occupied Palestinian Territories. Al-Fawwar camp has long been a hotspot for violence in the West Bank. Harassment of camp residents happens on an almost daily basis. When violence breaks out in the camp, it can leave large numbers of people injured and requiring urgent medical care. In 2021, MSF trained 80 volunteers in the camp in first aid and triaging the wounded.
Palestine

Palestine: MSF helps hospitals and volunteers prepare for casualties

In Palestine, following an Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip that killed more than 250 people and injured close to 2,000 others, MSF supported the health authorities through capacity building and reorganizing the emergency rooms in some of the main hospitals. MSF’s third medical train referral in Ukraine: arrival in Lviv. 06 and 07 April – 40 patients evacuated by train from #Kramatorsk. One transferred in #Kyiv and 39 transferred in #Lviv This follows after another evacuation the previous day of 17 patients from Kramatorsk to Dnipro. We heard the horrific news on the morning of 08 April that Kramatorsk station had been hit by one or more strikes. “I am horrified by reports of bombing or missile strike today on Kramatorsk station. We were there yesterday, and we saw hundreds of people crowding the station, trying to leave. The hospitals had been urgently calling us to evacuate their patients by train. Most came from #Sievierodonestk and other towns in #Luhansk region. We were just in time with this train. Big questions whether we will be able to go back to evacuate more people.”
