In Huila province, Angola, MSF supports an adapted referral system with motorbikes, known locally as “kaleluias” to transport mothers and their children. From February to April this year, more than 160 children were referred from the community to a health facility and hundreds more used the transportation service for follow up visits in the province.

Two years after the assassination of Haitian president Jovenel Moïse, the city of Port-au-Prince continues its descent into violence. Day after day, the inhabitants of Haiti’s capital risk being kidnapped, injured or even killed in street clashes between gangs, civilian self-defence brigades and the police. On the morning of 24 June 2023, the team on Geo Barents rescued 13 people, including 2 women and 2 unaccompanied minors, who were in distress on a unseaworthy rubber boat in the Malteser Search and Rescue zone. The survivors had spent more than 3 days at the Mediterranean Sea. After the rescue was over, the Italian authorities assigned La Spezia, northern Italy, as a place of safety to disembark the survivors.
