In Gore, in southern Chad, more than 6,000 refugees who fled violence in the Central African Republic (CAR) do their best to find a shelter in and around an old hospital . They lack everything, especially food. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is running a health center in collaboration with local authorities. MSF teams are also present in Bitoye and Sido where respectively over 6000 and 13,000 CAR refugees are in desperate need.

Ransacked medical supplies lie strewn on the floor at the MSF hospital in Leer, South Sudan, February 23, 2014. The hospital was thoroughly looted, burned, ransacked, and effectively destroyed, along with most of Leer, sometime between the final days of January and early February, 2014, leaving hundreds of thousands of people cut off from critical, lifesaving medical care. The hospital, opened by MSF 25 years ago, was the only secondary health care facility in Unity State.

To put more people on treatment (and as such combat the HIV epidemic) MSF started bringing free HIV testing to the communities. Community Health Agents (CHAPS) like Nelisiwe walk long distances to cover the households in their assigned areas. They often work in teams because of security concerns (rape, dogs, violent reactions when patients are diagnosed HIV+).

A camp for the internally displaced is located on the western outskirts of Kabul. Thousands of people live in the camp, most are from Helmand or Kandahar where they have fled their homes due to heavy fighting. This baby was born inside a mud and tent home inside the camp. The mother has continued to bleed for a week since the birth and says she can't stand.

Our teams are made up of tens of thousands of health professionals, logistic and administrative staff - most of them hired locally. Our actions are guided by medical ethics and the principles of independence and impartiality. We are a non-profit, self-governed, member-based organisation.
