Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been providing mental healthcare in two refugee camps in Lebanon for the past three years, both to Palestinian refugees and to vulnerable Lebanese in the area.
Now MSF has opened a new project in northern Lebanon, following the arrival of 4,500 Syrians who have fled the unrest in their country. Bruno Jochum, General Director of MSF, is just back from the region. Voices from the Field - 7 Feb 2012

The Gates Foundation-hosted conference held in London today, ‘Uniting To Combat Tropical Diseases’, draws attention to devastating tropical illnesses that have been neglected for too long. Libya

Detainees tortured and denied medical care

MSF teams began working in Misrata’s detention centres in August 2011, to treat war-wounded detainees. Since then, MSF doctors were increasingly confronted with patients who suffered injuries caused by torture during interrogation sessions. The interrogations were held outside the detention centres. In total, MSF treated 115 people who had torture-related wounds and reported all the cases to the relevant authorities in Misrata. In the state of Jonglei, South Sudan, civilians continue to bear the brunt of inter-communal fighting. Wounded patients are still arriving at the MSF hospital in Pibor, three weeks after the violent attack on the town and outlying villages. Hand surgeon Dr Stefan Krieger spent three weeks on an MSF mission in Gaza. He treated burn injuries and shared skills with the local surgical teams at the Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis.

Haiti

MSF increases hospital capacity in the area affected by the earthquake

January 12, 2010 will forever remain engraved in Haiti's collective memory. Nearly everyone in the country lost a relative, friend or neighbour in the earthquake that hit that day, and many survivors continue to suffer physical or psychological after-effects. Chad

Preventing another cholera epidemic

A cholera epidemic in Chad in 2010-2011 was the largest to hit the country in the last 15 years, with more than 17, 000 registered cases. Over the last year, MSF treated more than 12,700 patients – approximately three quarters of all the cases in the country. Brazil

MSF provides humanitarian aid to Haitian asylum seekers

MSF teams have been monitoring the situation of Haitians in this small town, located at the border between Brazil, Colombia and Peru, since November. In December, MSF started distributing more than 1,300 personal hygiene kits and other relief items. Project Update - 10 Jan 2012
