Emergency healthcare and protection needed as more people cross to Panama

Approximately 300 migrants arrive each day at reception centres in the province of Darién, Panama. MSF sees a need for safe routes of travel between Colombia and Panama and that urgent medical care must be provided to victims of sexual violence at their first point of arrival in Panama. Lifejackets are distributed to 129 people in a rubber boat by an MSF rib in international waters off the coast of Libya, on June 8, 2017. MSF rescue vessel Vos Prudence rescued a total of 726 people from the Mediterranean Sea over 2 days on June 8th and 9th, including 52 children.

Roughly 200 people from two boats in distress were rescued on the morning of May 9. Everyone is now safe on board the Geo Barents while we continue the search for more boats in distress. Right after the rescue we saw the Libyan Coast Guard navigating at a very close distance from the Geo Barents.
Mediterranean migration

After seven rescues from the central Mediterranean, 470 people need a place of safety

MSF teams conducted seven rescue operations from the central Mediterranean within 72 hours during which 470 people were rescued and brought upon the Geo Barents. The survivors need a safe place to disembark. Project Update - 16 May 2022
 
Patients visit health centres to see a doctor and collect medications. Many of the patients MSF teams have assisted in Hostomel suffer from chronic diseases such as asthma, hypertension or heart conditions. Pneumonia was also common after spending extended periods of time in basements in the cold, winter weather.

New violence triples number of wounded patients in Port-au-Prince

MSF has received 96 people with gunshot wounds in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in recent weeks as a result of increased violence between armed groups. Press Release - 12 May 2022
 
External view of Kybartai State Border Guards (SBG) Foreigner Registration Centre. Kybartai is one of the three Foreigner Registration Centers (FRC) for asylum seekers and migrants in Lithuania. Since January 2022, MSF teams have been providing primary health care and psychological support in two of the three centers, in Kybartai (Vilkaviskis District), and Medininkai (Vilnius District). According to national legislation, people’s freedom of movement in FRCs is restricted for one year and can be extended to 18 months on a case-by-case basis. Kybartai, a prison that was under the Ministry of Justice, became a State Border Guards (SBG) Foreigner Registration Centre for single men in September 2021, without any major renovations to the facility. It is estimated that 420 men are currently detained here. Across its four floors, people are separated by nationality. Within Kybartai there is a section for more severe detention (Corpus B), where an estimated 40 men are held because they are accused of a crime or because they are “trouble makers”. They have access to cooking facilities and an indoor shower. Individuals in Corpus B are not allowed outside, except for a small closed off area, and are accompanied to the market by SBGs.
Lithuania

People detained in Lithuania are experiencing abuse, violence and mental health distress

More than 2,500 asylum seekers and migrants are being arbitrarily detained in Lithuania in inadequate conditions. MSF calls on the Lithuanian authorities to end the arbitrary and prolonged detention of these people immediately. Press Release - 6 May 2022
