Nasser hospital, southern Gaza’s last lifeline, must be preserved

Israeli authorities-imposed displacement orders and movement restrictions on Nasser hospital, in southern Gaza, Palestine, are pushing the hospital to brink of closure. Press Release - 5 Jun 2025

On 19 May, Israeli forces struck Nasser hospital compound, 100 metres away from the intensive care unit and the inpatient department that are run by MSF. This is the third time in two months that Nasser hospital compound has been struck, once again depriving people of treatment and care. To reduce exposure, our teams were forced to temporarily close both the outpatient department and sedation room for patients awaiting or recovering from surgery, as well as suspend physiotherapy and mental health activities, which are essential for burn patients – most of whom are children.

This strike severely damaged the Ministry of Health pharmacy store, putting additional pressure on supplies at a time when medical stocks are running critically low due to the siege.

On the same day, Israeli forces have issued widescale evacuation orders, further limiting people’s access to medical care and MSF’s ability to provide it. An evacuation order covering almost the entire eastern part of Khan Younis, at the edge of Nasser hospital, forced people to immediately move towards Al Mawasi area, which resulted in a small number of patients in Nasser hospital on 20 May.

The MSF hospital in Agok is the only facility providing secondary care in the entire Abyei region of South Sudan. This structure deals with emergencies, surgeries, treatments of HIV, tuberculosis, chronic diseases as well as neglected diseases, such as snake bites, a real scourge in the region. In 2019, in order to improve the quality of care, a radiology room was set up and the pharmacy was extended. A lack of specialized structures in the surrounding states forces some patients to travel very long distances to get to Agok hospital, some have to walk for up to 10 hours. This phenomenon illustrates the need for a comprehensive hospital in a country where health care is almost non-existent

Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) strongly condemns the intentional opening of fire upon four of its vehicles while they were seeking safety for their staff amid escalating violence in Port au Prince, Haiti. The escalating violence close to the Turgeau Emergency Centre has forced MSF to suspend again its activities in the hospital on the 15th of March and evacuate all its teams as a precautionary measure. During one of the evacuation movements, the MSF-identified convoy was repeatedly and intentionally fired upon, despite prior coordination with authorities. While fortunately no one was killed, our staff suffered minor injuries.

View of a part of the displacement site in Katale in the Masisi health zone, that registers today about 5,000 displaced people. The camp president tours the site with the MSF health promotion team to discuss the current living conditions of the displaced persons. Access to water, latrines and showers is extremely limited, leading to potential risks of water-borne diseases such as cholera. To find food, most of the displaced persons look for work in the fields, and when they are luck enough find some, they are paid 2,500 francs a day - the equivalent of a bowl of beans.
