Severe medical needs persist amidst conflict in Sudan

Dr Khalid Elsheikh Ahmedana, MSF medical coordinator in Khartoum speaks about the situation on the ground amidst the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Voices from the Field - 4 May 2023

"On Saturday, when I heard the first gunshots outside at about 8.30am while having breakfast, I was just starting what I thought was my last day in Khartoum. My luggage was ready, my fridge and cupboards emptied, with just a few hours to wait before going to the airport to fly home after one year spent in Sudan."

"Quickly, we all went down to the safe room of our guesthouse, in the basement. I spent the day there sitting on the floor, along with more than 10 colleagues, jumping at the sound of heavy shootings, of low-flying war planes and subsequent bangs from air strikes. The sound was echoing in the room, walls and small windows were shaking. The sound of silence often ensued a blast, never lasting for long. "

In Mumane, a community near the city of Montepuez, more than 500 newly displaced families received MSF’s relief items kits.

Since June, it is estimated that violence has driven over 80,000 (according to OCHA) people out of their homes in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado. People fleeing violence have been on the move and often settle near communities with little to no means of livelihood. MSF is providing emergency assistance to new arrivals by distributing kits with essential relief items. MSF logistics and supply teams work around the clock to coordinate with multiple actors, organize the kits and provide a timely and comprehensive response. To this date, more than 4,000 families that have been displaced from heavy-hit locations in the province, such as Ancuabe, have benefitted from the kits in 9 localities in the province, such as Montepuez, Metuge and Meluco.

July 2021 marks the 10th birthday of South Sudan – the world's youngest country . In 2019, illustrator Ella Baron visited the town of Pibor to document the lengths that some mothers must go to reach maternity care in this part of the world.

The birth story of Maria and her mother Laito unravels as an extraordinary race with life-or-death stakes.

It is not, however, extraordinary at all. Their experience is a commonplace reality in areas of South Sudan where infrastructure is limited and where seemingly simple things can quickly become desperately complicated. The consequences of decades of violence are all around.

Having access to medical assistance in childbirth is important wherever you are in the world as complications can require specialist medical intervention to save the lives of both mother and baby.

In 2020, of approximately 2,300 health facilities in South Sudan, more than 1,300 were non-functional.

Fewer than half of South Sudanese people live within five kilometres of a functional health facility.

MSF is doing its part to help, and in 2020 MSF teams assisted 13,400 births in South Sudan.
