DRC Ebola outbreaks

On 18 November 2020, DRC declared their eleventh Ebola outbreak in 40 years over.

The outbreak, in the country’s northwest, in Équateur province, lasted just short of six months, having been declared on 1 June 2020.

The eleventh outbreak arrived as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared a previous long-running outbreak of Ebola over in the country’s northeast, with cases first detected in August 2018.

That outbreak, in DRC's northeastern North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri provinces, was the country's second outbreak that started in 2018 and the country's tenth Ebola outbreak in 40 years. Before it was declared over on 25 June 2020, the outbreak recorded 3,470 people infected and claimed nearly 2,300 lives. It remains the biggest outbreak ever in DRC, and the second-biggest ever.

The eleventh outbreak was the fourth Ebola epidemic since the end of the outbreak in West Africa in 2016 – and was the second epidemic in Équateur province in less than two years. The previous outbreak in Équateur province, between May and August 2018, which affected the city of Mbandaka, included 38 confirmed cases of Ebola and claimed 14 lives.
