MSF’s Munira Gulomova conducts a mental health consultation with Akmal Uganov, 25, at his home in the city of Tursunzoda, Tajikistan. Uganov fell ill with tuberculosis (TB) in 2019. “At first, his mother got tuberculosis. She was ashamed of her illness and didn’t seek treatment. As a result, she passed away. Her father also died of tuberculosis," Dr. Maysara Shifoeva, MSF staff says. MSF started to provide support to Uganov after the death of his parents. It included monthly medical check-ups, medication, food, and psychological support to ensure effective treatment.

We are working with the Tajikistan Ministry of Health and Social Protection to diagnose and treat children with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB).

Where possible, we aim to treat TB patients at home, and demonstrate that the comprehensive TB care model is feasible. This includes patient follow-up, active testing for new patients, laboratory diagnosis, individualised treatment and psychosocial support (including play therapy). 

In the south of the country, we run the Zero TB project in Kulob, aiming for TB elimination. This project focuses on TB prevention and care in households, places where people seek care and where they work. 

We have also started working in the penitentiary system with the aim of improving the quality of TB care and other comorbidities in the central prison hospital and strengthening TB screening in prisons and pre-trial detention facilities.

MSF in Tajikistan in 2025 Improving tuberculosis (TB) care remains the focus of Médecins Sans Frontières activities in Tajikistan. We implement a holistic, person-centred approach, treating patients in their homes, where possible.

In Kulob, in the south of the country, we continue to run our ‘Zero TB’ project, aimed at eliminating TB through prevention and care in households, workplaces, and health facilities. The project comprises active case finding, patient follow-up, laboratory diagnosis, and individualised treatment, including for drug-resistant TB. Our teams visit neighbourhoods and villages, using portable x-ray machines to screen people close to their homes, and refer those with TB symptoms for testing and treatment, in line with World Health Organization guidelines. 

We also provide mental health and psychosocial support, including counselling and assistance with treatment adherence, to patients through the recovery process. 

Throughout the year, we continued to help the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population to strengthen national TB strategies, by enhancing diagnostic capacity, training healthcare workers, and introducing digital chest x-ray systems with computer-aided detection.
