Cholera cases are increasing in Port-au-Prince

MSF teams have observed a significant increase in the number of patients admitted to the cholera treatment centres (CTC) in Port-au-Prince. MSF has treated almost 160,000 patients since the first cases of cholera were confirmed a year ago. The cholera epidemic, which has so far caused more than 250 deaths, started in March in Kisangani, the capital of Oriental Province and the last stop on the Congo River for the cargo barges that are the main form of transport in this largely roadless area. As cholera epidemic spreads in DRC, MSF opens emergency treatment centres along Congo river

The three major factors that promote the spread of cholera are all currently present in DRC: dense urban population; a lack of hygiene and little access to clean water; and the confirmed presence of the disease in several locations. In a country where the health system is faltering, this outbreak comes at a time when several other medical emergencies are already causing havoc, in particular a measles epidemic that is raging in several provinces. MSF alarmed by resurgence of cholera

"Since May 29, in one week, MSF has treated almost 2,000 patients in the capital, and we have also been asked to intervene in other areas in the interior of the country, " said MSF head of mission Romain Gitenet. As of the end of May, cholera has killed nearly 5,000 people from among the 300,000 cases reported in the country. Three per cent of the country’s population have contracted the disease.
