Italy must drastically improve conditions facing refugees, asylum seekers and migrants fleeing North Africa, including Libya

When 12 boats carrying 2,665 refugees, asylum seekers and migrants landed on Italian shores, a further 715 people were rescued from another off-shore boat. Once again, MSF calls on Italian authorities to drastically improve reception conditions for new arrivals, particularly for the most vulnerable - women, children, unaccompanied minors and victims of violence. “With the latest heavy bombardments in Mistrata, the situation is worsening as hospitals have to discharge patients before their treatment is completed in order to treat the new wounded from fighting. Marked deterioration of situation in west of Ivory Coast

As the population flees violence, medical personnel are deserting health posts. Faced with this increasing volatility, MSF medical teams are adapting their operations and the organization is asking all parties to the conflict to allow its medical teams to care for patients, regardless of their affiliations.

Greece

Immediate action needed to improve unbearable living conditions in detention facilities in Evros, Greece

There are so many people detained that they don’t have the space to even lie down in the cells, while the heating often does not work, leaving migrants freezing in sub-zero temperatures. Kenya

The Ifo II refugee camp, Kenya, lies empty while tens of thousands of Somali refugees live in unacceptable conditions less than 10 kilometers away

“The minimum international humanitarian standards are not being met,” said MSF Humanitarian Affairs Officer, Elena Estrada. “The refugees have scarce access to water, food, non-food items and shelter. Greece

Critical situation for migrants and asylum seekers in detention facilities in Evros region, Greece

During an assessment carried out in November in two detention centers (Venna, Fylakio) and three border police stations (Soufli, Tychero and Feres), MSF documented the harsh and inhumane conditions in which detained migrants are being kept. Most of the detention facilities are very overcrowded, operating at two or three times their capacity. Urgent humanitarian assistance required for Somali refugees living outside Dagahaley camp

At least 700 Somali families who fled the war in Somalia now face unacceptable living conditions in spontaneous settlements outside the overcrowded refugee camp of Dagahaley in Kenya. The rainy season having just started, their situation has become even more precarious.
