We set up the MSF Access Campaign in 1999 to push for access to, and the development of, life-saving and life-prolonging medicines, diagnostic tests and vaccines for people in our programmes and beyond.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Dozens wounded during violent fighting in North Kivu

Violent fighting broke out on 24 and 25 July in Rutshuru Territory. Sporadic fighting has been underway between the Congolese army and armed rebel groups in Rutshuru Territory since May. MSF teams working in the Rutshuru hospital have treated 66 wounded people so far. A majority of the wounded were civilians. Fighting has also displaced several thousand people. 'What we are facing is an extremely serious situation'

About 100,000 refugees fleeing the fighting in the Sudanese state of Blue Nile have taken refuge in Maban county in South Sudan. In the camp of Batil, home to 34,000 people, the number of children with malnutrition is increasing but humanitarian response remains inadequate. Deteriorating health situation for refugees in Yida camp

Close to 500 people are arriving at the refugee camp in Yida every day. UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, reports that 63,500 people are living in a camp that was originally intended for 15,000 people. The refugees are arriving in extremely poor health, having walked for days, and sometimes weeks, across the Nuba mountains, to escape conflict and food insecurity. Press Release - 13 Jul 2012

MSF maintains operations on Rutshuru territory

Fighting resumed in early July in the region of Rutshuru, after a brief lull. Rebels of the March 23, 2009 movement (M23) advanced towards the towns of Jomba Chengerero, Rwanguba and Bunagana until they took control of Rutshuru and Kiwanja on Sunday, 8 July. Jamam refugee camp under water

Mortality rates are exceeding emergency thresholds in a refugee camp in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state, currently home to a quarter of roughly 120,000 refugees who have fled Sudan’s Blue Nile state since late last year. The onset of heavy seasonal rains flooded the camps and gravely expanded the risk of illness for the already weakened refugees. MSF warns of worsening crisis in the camps.
