The mayor of Grande-Synthe sought the assistance of MSF to bring dry and warm conditions to the migrant since the State did not respond to its requests. In this perspective, MSF identified, a month ago, a site with an area of 25,000 m². The objective for MSF is to install on the new site 500 tents, each tent accommodating five people. Priority is also to provide adequate sanitation by installing a sufficient number of toilet, showers and latrines facilities. For example, while there are 32 latrines for 2,500 people in the current camp of Grande-Synthe, it is planned to have on the new site a ratio of one latrine for 20 people.

MSF is poised to take action in the face of the authorities’ failure to do so by offering decent living conditions to 2,500 refugees in Grande-Synthe, France. 9th June 2015. Pozzallo port (Sicily). MSF staff - Cultural Mediator Moussa. During triage and the medical screening of 212 refugees, migrants and asylum seekers, before admission to the primary reception centre in Pozzallo where MSF works to provide healthcare for new arrivals (in collaboration with Ministry of Health). On the 9th June 446 people arrived on the Italian Coast Guard ship in Pozzallo port (212 were admitted to the centre and 234 were transferred elsewhere).

Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) and Greenpeace conduct joint sea operations to provide assistance at sea to boats in distress off the coast of Lesbos island in Greece, in coordination with and in support of the Greek Coast Guard. Two Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) are deployed. One leads the operation while the other acts as a support unit.

Nine wounded in Saudi-led coalition airstrike on MSF clinic in Taiz

On 2 December, three air strikes targeted a park in Taiz city’s Al Houban district, 2 km from MSF’s clinic. The MSF team immediately evacuated the clinic and informed the Saudi-led coalition that their jet planes were mounting an attack nearby. The clinic itself came under attack. The wounded, two of them with critical injuries, were transferred to Al Qaidah and Al Resalah hospitals. MSF supports both hospitals in treating war-wounded patients. Press Release - 3 Dec 2015
 
Yebbi camp, in Bosso, Diffa region, in south-eastern Niger. At the beginning of May, thousands of people fled their villages on islands in Lake Chad, after Nigerien authorities urged them to leave the area following the deadly attack of Boko Haram on the island of Karamga. Most of them are settled around two camps, one in Bosso (Yebbi) and another one in Nguigmi (Kimegana), two towns located near the lake.

MSF assists victims of new wave of violence in Diffa region

An attack on a village in the Diffa region of Niger on 25 November has left 18 dead and 16 wounded, according to local authorities. She has already been tested negative previously, but she came back to the test tent during the event to make sure her status didn’t change. *** Local Caption *** On April 11th, 2014 –Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and local health authorities officially launched a new HIV program that they will jointly run in Ndhiwa sub-county, Homa Bay County, in Western Kenya. In this region, more than one fourth of the population is leaving with HIV. During the 4 years of activities, the program will aim at reducing the number of new infections among the population as well as the mortality related to HIV. This will be made possible by implementing universal and regular testing for the whole population of Ndhiwa sub county and setting up early quality treatment for people living with HIV as well as providing quality care for people hospitalized. Furthermore, the increase access to viral load testing will help ascertain that patients are at the lowest risk of transmitting the virus The MSF / Ministry of Health program will focus on simplifying the way healthcare is provided to patients, through an adaptation of medical protocols and the inclusion of non-medical workers in the provision of care. Such medical protocols will include encouraging the community to get tested and receive ART as early as possible if found infected to reduce transmitting the virus to others, as well as to support adherence to the treatment. Systematic screening and provision of ART for all HIV positive pregnant women will be implemented, in order to reduce mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of the virus. HIV testing program will also be integrated in routine immunization programs for young children. Medical male circumcision will also be key in impacting the rate at which men get infected.

MSF welcomes progress on getting HIV treatment to more people and urges all affected countries to take up new World Health Organization (WHO) ‘test and treat’ guidelines before next June’s UN High-level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, where donor governments should commit to a funding plan to close the global treatment gaps.
