We set up the MSF Access Campaign in 1999 to push for access to, and the development of, life-saving and life-prolonging medicines, diagnostic tests and vaccines for people in our programmes and beyond.

GAVI needs to offer lower vaccine prices to humanitarian actors

The GAVI Alliance should systematically extend the prices it obtains for vaccines to humanitarian actors that are often well placed to reach unvaccinated children, MSF said today at the GAVI Partners Forum meeting in Tanzania. Results from the largest multi-country implementation of the new rapid tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic test reveal an urgent need to address the growing global crisis of drug-resistant TB. The data was collected from 25 MSF projects in 14 countries over a nearly 18-month period. It shows an overall 50 per cent increase in the diagnosis of TB using Xpert MTB/RIF. Novartis challenges pro-health patent law

Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis heads to the Indian Supreme Court today in New Delhi, in a final bid to undermine a key public health safeguard in Indian patent law specifically designed to prevent drug companies from abusive patenting practices which keep medicine prices high. If successful, the move would have a devastating impact on access to essential medicines across the developing world, according to MSF, which relies on affordable generic drugs produced in India to carry out its work in 68 countries. German pharmaceutical company Bayer is attempting to overturn a ground-breaking compulsory licence issued by India which has allowed more affordable generic versions of a cancer drug to be produced in the interest of public health. Catastrophic health situation in refugee camps

New epidemiological data from two refugee camps in South Sudan show mortality and malnutrition rates well above emergency thresholds. More than 170,000 refugees have crossed the border to escape conflict in Sudan’s Blue Nile and South Kordofan states.
