Two new rapid screening tests are expected next year, and one new oral treatment is in clinical trial. GAVI needs to offer lower vaccine prices to humanitarian actors

The GAVI Alliance should systematically extend the prices it obtains for vaccines to humanitarian actors that are often well placed to reach unvaccinated children, MSF said today at the GAVI Partners Forum meeting in Tanzania. Currently, humanitarian actors such as MSF are not able to access these prices, and are left to negotiate access to vaccines on a cumbersome case-by-case basis. Press Release - 5 Dec 2012

Burundi and Sierra Leone: Access to emergency care significantly reduces maternal mortality

New research from MSF projects in Kabezi, Burundi, and Bo, Sierra Leone, indicates that up to 74 per cent of maternal deaths could be avoided by providing access to emergency obstetric care. MSF data for 2011 indicate that the introduction of an ambulance referral system together with the provision of emergency obstetric services can significantly reduce maternal mortality. Results from new TB test reveal urgent need to scale up treatment

Results from the largest multi-country implementation of the new rapid tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic test reveal an urgent need to address the growing global crisis of drug-resistant TB. The data was collected from 25 MSF projects in 14 countries over a nearly 18-month period. It shows an overall 50 per cent increase in the diagnosis of TB using Xpert MTB/RIF. A novel prevention programme has dramatically reduced malaria cases in Mali and Chad

A large-scale malaria prevention programme appears to be drastically reducing the number of new cases of the disease among young children during the peak transmission season. Preliminary results from the programme, known as seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) show that the number of cases of simple malaria dropped by 65 per cent in the intervention area in Mali, and by up to 86 per cent in Chad. Uganda

MSF sets up Ebola treatment centre

An emergency team from MSF has set up a treatment centre for Ebola in Kagadi, western Uganda, where 24 suspected cases have already been admitted. So far the outbreak has claimed the lives of 17 people. MSF staff have also put in place control measures to prevent the epidemic from spreading further, and to protect the local community and health workers. Press Release - 3 Aug 2012

MSF team fights Ebola outbreak

An emergency team from MSF is in Kagadi, in western Uganda’s Kibaale district, to help fight an outbreak of the Ebola virus. Other MSF teams in Uganda are closely monitoring the situation. The Ebola outbreak, confirmed by the Ugandan government on 28 July, has killed at least 14 people, while at least 20 more are suspected to be infected. Press Release - 31 Jul 2012
