Since the end of April, the conflict-ravaged counties of Leer and Mayendit, in South Sudan’s north, have once again been wracked by violence. Thousands of people are caught between the frontlines of the fighting, and health facilities have been attacked. Two years ago, fighting erupted in Jebel Marra, southwestern Sudan, forcing nearly 160,000 people to look for protection. Over 23,000 settled around the small village of Sortoni and clustered together to form a camp for displaced people. An outbreak of Ebola has been declared in Equateur province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The outbreak, in the northeast of the country, has affected 44 people who have presented symptoms of haemorrhagic fever in the region; 3 confirmed as Ebola, and and 23 deaths have been notified by the national health authorities. Since 14 May 2018, a new cycle of inter-community violence has taken hold in Bambari, a city in the Central African Republic (CAR) that, in 2017, remained relatively stable while the rest of the country spiralled into increasingly fractured conflict. Three years ago, Fajimatou gave birth to her fourth child. Since then, she had been suffering from incontinence and regular urinary infections. Too embarrassed to raise this problem with the staff at the health post, she had kept it to herself.
