Stories of people who fled Mogadishu

In March and April, 2007, heavy fighting in Mogadishu resulted in a large number of civilian casualties and thousands of people fleeing the capital. In all of the projects around the country, MSF staff witnessed displaced people arriving from Mogadishu. Although by the end of May it was estimated that two thirds of the people displaced by the fighting had returned to Mogadishu, many are unwilling or unable to do so.

What displaced and refugees face in Chad

On December 5, United Nations agencies, along with many of their NGO partners, decided to drastically reduce the numbers of their staff in the field because of insecurity.
MSF fears the impact that this withdrawal will have on the refugee populations, which are highly dependent on this aid. Internally displaced Chadians who have benefited from only minimal assistance now face even fewer opportunities to obtain aid. Project Update - 19 Dec 2006

Caring for refugees and displaced people amid deteriorating security

While challenged with the deteriorating security situation, MSF continues to provide medical, nutritional and psychosocial assistance to tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees from Darfur. MSF teams are witnessing an increase in attacks and looting of villages close to the border. Many people have been wounded and thousands have been forced onto the roads. MSF is concerned about the fate of 5,000 displaced Chadians who fled an attack on the Koloye site, in the eastern part of the country, and have disappeared in the area even as violence expands in the region. That number included 37 MSF employees. We had no information about them. We have since learned that some of displaced persons fled to Adé and Kumu, two villages further north, accompanied by the populations of neighboring villages.
