We set up the MSF Access Campaign in 1999 to push for access to, and the development of, life-saving and life-prolonging medicines, diagnostic tests and vaccines for people in our programmes and beyond.

HIV/AIDS

African patients adhere well to anti-HIV regimens

In one study, patients in Kampala, Uganda, were taking 90-94% of their medications. Two other studies - by MSF, of 550 patients in Khayelitsha, and another, of 58 patients in Senegal - had similar findings. Estimates in developed nations are around 70%. Project Update - 13 Sep 2003

The collapse of healthcare, malnutrition, violence and displacement in western Côte d’Ivoire

In the mobile clinics, MSF is seeing many severely malnourished children who emerge from the bush as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). On the other side of the problem, the response to malnutrition has been seriously insufficient. MSF is concerned that its observations made during clinic activities are only a muted reflection of the reality beyond what is learned from consultations. Malawi

Life continues - in spite of HIV

"Africa is dying! Protect yourselves against HIV!". This is how the President of Malawi campaigns for the use of condoms. But already almost a million of the near ten million inhabitants of this country are HIV-positive. The educational programs are not helping any longer. They need medical help to survive. In July 2001, Médecins Sans Frontières began to treat HIV/Aids patients with antiretroviral medicines in the Chiradzulu hospital. Dr Norbert Lüneborg reports from this pilot project. Our teams are made up of tens of thousands of health professionals, logistic and administrative staff - most of them hired locally. Our actions are guided by medical ethics and the principles of independence and impartiality. We are a non-profit, self-governed, member-based organisation.
