After three-month siege in Libya, trauma surgery and training dominate MSF activities

MSF has begun working with Libyan medical teams at the advanced medical posts set up close to the front lines to stabilize the wounded before transferring them to a hospital... During lunch breaks, one MSF surgeon, using a USB stick containing extensive information and videos, demonstrated how he had provided initial trauma management and organize surgical treatment to an audience of approximately 40 Kasr Ahmed hospital staff, including surgeons, doctors, anesthetists and medical students. Europe must accept the boat people fleeing Libya

An open letter by MSF addressed to the leaders of the states of the European Union involved in the war in Libya is being published today in 11 newspapers across Europe. In the letter, the organisation criticises contradictory European policies, which claim to be conducting a war to protect civilians, whilst closing its borders to the victims of that same war, on the pretext of preventing a massive influx of illegal immigrants. Their non-refoulement, decent reception conditions for all and access to asylum procedures for those who request it must be guaranteed. MSF carries out second boat evacuation from Misrata, Libya, with 64 war-wounded onboard

“With the latest heavy bombardments in Mistrata, the situation is worsening as hospitals have to discharge patients before their treatment is completed in order to treat the new wounded from fighting. MSF evacuates over 70 war-wounded by boat from Misrata

The boat arrived early today at the port-city of Sfax, Tunisia and the patients were transferred to hospitals to receive urgent medical care. Upon arrival, Tunisian health authorities organized the transfer of the patients to a dozen medical facilities. Thanks to their support, as well as the efforts of the medical staff in Misrata who risked their safety, the evacuation and medical treatment of the patients was made possible.
