Diphtheria outbreak in Zhare Dasht IDP camp

The residents of Zhare Dasht camp in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan are facing a rare outbreak of diphtheria - an infectious disease that has been all but eradicated in the western world. This year, over 1.5 million Afghans have already come back to their homeland. No-one had anticipated such high figures. All these people need food, shelter, drinking water and jobs. The country is nowhere near able to handle this. Many have simply exchanged one calamitous situation for another and are desperately searching for any means of survival - also in the South, where the persistent drought creates further complications. MSF activity at the Afghanistan earthquake

Following the earthquakes that struck the Nahrin town and region on March 25 and 26, an MSF team of six medical staff were active in the area immediately.
