Amsterdam Procurement Unit

This logistical centre in Amsterdam purchases, tests, and stores equipment including vehicles, communications material, power supplies, water-processing facilities and nutritional supplements.

Southern Africa Medical Unit

SAMU provides strategic, clinical and implementation support to various MSF projects with medical activities related to HIV and TB. This medical unit is based in Cape Town, South Africa.

Tanzania Refugee Crisis - November 2016 — More than 300 people arrive each day in Nduta camp, originally designed for 50,000 people but now hosting over 65,000. New arrivals come by bus, first crossing the border point, then to transit camps and and then staying a few nights in the camp reception centre on arrival to Nduta. While they are being registered by UNHCR and before a family shelter is allocated to them, they live in overcrowded communal tents, facing poor hygiene and a high risk of malaria transmission. New arrivals have to queue for hours in the reception centre to receive their daily meals. Some of these people have already been allocated a shelter, but have not received their refugee card and dry food rations. They have to come back every day to the reception centre to get a warm meal. MSF is present at the reception centre to screen all new arrivals. “A lot of them arrive exhausted and in bad health condition. We do their medical check-up and send those in need to MSF clinics or refer them to the hospital. They also get vaccinated and pregnant women are scheduled for antenatal consultations.” Medical teams have seen a big increase in the number of consultations, both at the reception centres and in MSF’s four health posts and hospital. The number of deliveries has risen as well. “When I arrived a few weeks ago, there were around five deliveries per day. Now we have around 12,” says Sally Parker, midwife.

I come from the province of Rutana, and we had to walk for a day before reaching the border. One of my 5 children has fallen sick. He has fever and is also suffering from hallucinations. I am alone here with my children; my husband has stayed in Burundi. I have nothing else than the clothes that we wear. I don’t know where we will be settled.”

Tanzania Refugee Crisis - November 2016 — Today, people have just enough access to water in the camp. But if the number of people continues to increase, aid organisations will need to step up and build new water distribution supply systems. For now, they don’t have the capacity to do so. Having enough clean water is crucial for hygiene and sanitation, and lack of it has a direct impact on health. The rates of diarrhoeal and skin disease can escalate very quickly in poor conditions.

Tanzania Refugee Crisis - November 2016 — The World Food Programme (WFP) is in charge of food distribution. Maize flour and green peas are distributed to refugees in order to reach the recommended nutritional intake of 2100 calories per person per day. In October, WFP announced a 60 % cut in the food rations, a step only forestalled by a last minute donation. As the numbers of refugees increase, the risk of further cuts in the near future is a pressing concern. “Any cuts would have a direct impact on the nutritional status of refugees. In a few weeks only we would see an increase in the number of malnourished children,” says Tanya Hachem, medical team leader in Nduta camp.

Tanzania Refugee Crisis - November 2016 — Sally Parker, MSF midwife, receives yet another pregnant woman at the MSF maternity. “Burundians are very stoic by nature. You will hardly ever hear them scream when they give birth, even though there is no epidural available here. Those who deliver for the first time might moan, but the tradition here is to stay silent.” Mothers and their newborns stay only a few hours in the post-partum room. If there is no medical need for them or their baby to stay, they are directly sent home after having received supplementary vitamins. They will come back a week later for a medical checkup.
