The application process and the requirements varies depending on the MSF office through which you are recruited. Here is a general guide on how to apply to work with us.
Each role has a detailed job description. Before you apply take a good look at the job specification page for the role you would like to apply for and make sure you can commit to working with us for at least nine months (surgeons, anaesthetists, epidemiologists and obstetricians/gynaecologists may go on shorter missions).
We look for candidates with at least two years of relevant professional experience. You must be flexible and adaptable, with the ability to work and live as part of a team. Speaking several languages is a valued asset. Read the full list of minimum requirements.
If you meet the requirements then you need to apply through the MSF office responsible for your country of residence. You can choose your country in the form below and complete the process on the relevant website.
If we think that your skills and experience match our requirements, you will be invited to attend an interview. Applicants for some positions will need to take a technical test.
Following a successful interview and reference checks, you will be included in a 'pool' from which you can selected for a post.
You may be sent on a preparation course before going on your first assignment. You will have a briefing at your recruiting office before departure.
We will arrange your flights to and from the project in which you will be working.
On arrival in the field you will be given a full briefing by the in-country team, and when you reach the project there could be a handover period with the person you will be replacing.

We are a field-based movement engaging MSF volunteers and staff from all over the world in a shared commitment to medical humanitarian action.
Through MSF associations, members have the right and responsibility to voice their opinions and contribute to the definition and guidance of our social mission. The associations bring together individuals in formal and informal debates and activities - in the field, in general assemblies at national and regional levels, and in an annual international assembly.
Because the people making the decisions are current or former field or office staff, MSF remains relevant to the needs seen in the field, and focused on medical care and on our core principles: independence, impartiality, and neutrality.
There is no maximum age limit for our field staff. Difficult working conditions do mean that applicants must be in a good state of health.
It takes around four to six months from the submission of an application to eventual addition to our pool of field staff.
You can apply as soon as you have definite dates of your availability, normally around six months before you want to start.
Assignments are generally for between six and 12 months for all professions, except anaesthetists and surgeons who, due to the intensity of their work, are placed in projects for six weeks to three months.
Working hours vary considerably depending on the project with, on average, one day off per week. Work can frequently be hectic and you may be required to put in longer hours. However, time is normally set aside for rest and relaxation.
MSF will arrange and cover you for health insurance while on assignment. In the event of medical evacuations, repatriation is also covered.
Individuals are matched to specific roles. It is therefore highly unlikely that two people would simultaneously be matched to two jobs in the same place at the same time.
Living conditions in the field (security, housing, etc) make it difficult for field staff to be accompanied by children or partners who are not participating in the project.
It is not possible to honour specific country requests. MSF recruits applicants into a pool before matching them to a specific position based on their skills, experience and background. MSF expects candidates to be flexible about where they work so that we can meet the needs of the field. However, special skills, languages and restrictions are taken into consideration in each placement.
