MSF left Eritrea in 2001.

During its fight for independence and as hostilities grew with Ethiopia, MSF was providing medical care and support in Eritrea.

MSF was providing medical and surgical care in Eritrea in 1979, during its fight for independence.

In 2000 and 2001 we worked to support communities as hostilities with Ethiopia ended. MSF provided basic healthcare, vaccinations, water and sanitation support and care for malnutrition to people who were displaced in the fighting. We stopped working in camps for displaced people in June 2001 but stayed in the country for a few extra months to assist in rebuilding destroyed health facilities and water sources.
