Now considered the largest current humanitarian emergency in the world, over one million people have been displaced by violence in Sudan. Between 100,000 and 140,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed the border into Chad and are sheltering, just inside Chad territory, along a 600km long strip of land. Inside Sudan, massive numbers are looking for some safe refuge from the violence. MSF is active in all three Darfur states in Sudan.
In May, Gry Haaheim of MSF returned from Chad where she saw conditions faced by refugees fleeing violence in neighbouring Sudan. There are too few refugee camps and all are over populated. Water and food is a problem and malnutrition continues to rise. Go here for more. This is a Real Player file.
Massive aid urgently needed in Darfur, Sudan
Displaced people in the Darfur region of western Sudan are in extreme danger, and the massive emergency aid needed to ensure their survival is lacking. Although 600,000 people have been displaced, the volume of assistance and the number of humanitarian actors are still too weak. Go here for more.
BBC video report: CHAD - "On Sudan's border, a solitary field hospital stuggles to cope with the influx of wounded people - mostly civilians." Go here.
In the last two weeks of January, Peter Casaer of MSF visited Chad to view the conditions of the Sudanese refugees gathering there. The attached gallery is a selection images he took while there. In addition, there is an audio file here that can be launched to accompany the gallery to give more detail to what he has seen.
