Here in the MSF program in Jordan, Mouna continues her battle to walk again. Today, Mouna will finally be given her prosthetic limbs and his time she gets to keep them.
As always, Mouna’s uncle is at her side but today a cousin has come too. They want to be there for Mouna as she takes her first steps. The prosthetics technician makes some final adjustments to make sure they fit perrfectly.
Once again, when the moment comes for Mouna to let go and stand on her own she is overcome with fear. The physiotherapist holds onto her.
Dialogue PROSTHETICS TECHNICIAN with MOUNA
Prothésiste: Are you ok? Look in front of you.
Kiné: Is it difficult ?
Mouna: I’m tired.
Kiné: Tired ?
Is it tiredness or pain?
Go on, go on, once more. Walk a bit further.
Dialogue MOUNA with PROSTHETICS TECHNICIAN
Prothésiste: Walk towards me… grab my hands. Lift your head up, don’t be frightened. Take small steps. Turn round. Lift your head, lift your head up.
Mouna: I can’t, I can’t do it.
Prothésiste: Yes you can, I wouldn’t ask you otherwise.
Prothésiste: Does it hurt?
Mouna: No but I’m frightened you’ll let go.
Prothésiste: Don’t be frightened.
Mouna: I’m frightened that I’ll fall.
Prothésistes : I’m holding you, you won’t fall, you won’t fall.
Mouna: Don’t take such big steps…
Prosthetics technician: You think I’m going to make you fall? Come on, let’s do it again, move your legs. Are you tired ?
Mouna: I just walked 7 floor tiles.
Prothésiste: Good, that’s good, count the floor tiles. Oh, go on, lean on me.
PHYSIOTHERAPIST (in English): She can just about stand up alone but after a week or two of training, I think she’ll be able to walk alone.
Dialogue MOUNA with UNCLE: Oncle: Go on, stand up like he told you to. Try to relax. Mouna: You don’t understand, it hurts Oncle: He doesn’t want to hurt you, he’s helping you.
UNCLE: Thank God, she can walk. Of course she’s happy. It’s up to her from now on.
Itv MOUNA: It’s better with legs. I don’t want to go back into a wheelchair. Of course I’m happy, I’m very happy.
COMMENTARY: Mouna is gradually gaining confidence… Her uncle, who’s taken on the role of father, continues to support and encourage her Soon, they’ll be returning to their loved ones in Baghdad.
