MSF video: Raped women in Kitchanga, DRC
Transcript:

DISCLAIMER (appears in the opening credits): Despite being offered anonymity, the women in the next film clearly asked to give testimonies openly. The centre providing assistance to raped women in Kitchanga is supported by Medecins Sans Frontieres.

Virginie, nurse "It's a part of our life. It's already normal. But it's a taboo. They can rape me, my mother and my grandmother. But there is no punishment. There is no sanction against the violator."

Bibiche, nurse "Before we received six or eight cases a month. Now it's worse. Now we have 8 or 10 cases a day. These are new cases. Only a few come compared to the number that stay in their village. Women who have been raped can get medical help here. They receive medicine and they can also stay over night."

Maene, patient "They raped me. It was a Saturday. The violator had a machete and he told me he was going to kill me. I was afraid of being killed and he told me to lie on the ground. I did it because I was afraid to die. He took my clothes."

Georgette, patient "They forced us to go near the river. There, they seized the opportunity to rape us. I was raped by two men. Then they took the money that I had for the market. I had 10 dollars."

Georgette Tulimabo was raped three days ago on her way to the market. The armed rapists carried off her nine-year-old son who was with her when it happened.

Espérance, patient "They were in uniform. They left with my husband. Afterwards they took me into the forest because I didn't give them money. He raped me. The other ones looted my pots and jerry cans. One has to work in the fields to survive. However, men run the risk of being killed and women of being raped. So women walk to the fields, with all of the consequences involved. Young women, elderly women, but even children and babies are victims."

Virginie, nurse "A lot of women are raped in the countryside. But they can't talk about it because of their husband. If the woman tells her husband that she was raped, he will force her to leave immediately. She will not know where to go. That's why a lot of women stay silent instead of coming here for treatment."

Georgette, patient "We are angry because they hurt us. When somebody who's not your husband has sex with you in the forest, it's really bad. We are really angry at the Congo where we live."
