This image was taken at the Quartering and Family Area (QFA) for Unita soldiers in Gamba, Biè province. There are 35 QFAs in Angola where soldiers and their families are able to go, with their families, to receive aid. Even among the military forces, where conditions had been thought to be better, malnutrition levels exceeded emergency thresholds.

If the band measures in the red zone - as if the case here - the child is suffering from severe malnutrition and is in danger of dying. MSF maintains Therapeutic Feeding Centres throughout Angola to provide emergency care to the severely malnourished. Additional care is being given to the Angolan population through Supplementary Feeding Centres and blanket feeding programmes.

© Francesco Zizola/Magnum Photo Image dated: June 3, 2002 A mother with the body of her son, just five months old. They arrived at Kuito, from Chitembo, the day before - but the child died from malnutrition as his condition was too far gone to recover. People from Chitembo started coming to MSF feeding centres in Kuito in April, immediately after the latest peace. They were already severely very malnourished. Data collected at the time showed global malnutrition rates of 26% and severe malnutrition rates of 9%. These figures far exceeded figures the emergency threshold.
