Transcript: It is estimated that there are over 100 million cases of dengue fever worldwide each year and, depending on the year, hundreds of thousands of cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, the most severe form.
The case-fatality rate of the Hemorrhagic version of the disease in most countries is about 5%.
This year, there has been a particularly severe outbreak of the disease in Cambodia. Offical figures recorded nearly 15,000 cases by July 2007 compared to 16,600 cases for the whole of 2006. The outbreak also proved more lethal, with a death toll of 182 by July 2007 compared to 158 for the whole last year.
However, despite its scope, today, there is no specific medication for treatment of dengue infection.
