The annual "hunger season" seems likely to be particularly serious in the Sahel this year, and a few regions may face acute nutritional crises in the coming months. MSF is expanding its nutritional activities to address the seasonal “peak” in malnutrition rates, while also developing longer-term approaches to be integrated into regular programs.
“Thanks to an innovative way of doing research and development where the need for an affordable product was factored in from the very start, this vaccine costs only 40 US cents per dose” said Dr Tido von Schoen-Angerer, Director of MSF's Access Campaign. “But despite its low price, no donor has yet come forward to offer financial support to implement the vaccine beyond the first three countries.
During the rainy season, from June to September, flooding occurs in several western African countries. Two years ago, the toll was heavy: 300 deaths and 800,000 people affected across the region. This year, the number of deaths is particularly high in Sierra Leone (103 of the 159 dead).
Malnutrition is a chronic problem in Burkina Faso, but hits particularly hard in the period between the two annual harvests, known as the “hunger gap”.
© Kazuma Moimoi Around 80 per cent of the 14.3 million people in Burkina Faso depend on subsistence farming, and it is often a struggle for farmers to produce sufficient food for their families. This can particularly affect children because if they do not get the nutrients and vitamins they need in the early phase of life, their mental and physical development can be impaired. They also become susceptible to infections and potentially fatal illnesses. Since 2007 MSF has been working in two provinces in the north of Burkina Faso where childhood malnutrition is frequently found.
