Symphony Data Manager

Location: Amsterdam, Brussels, Barcelona or Geneva

Duration: One year contract (option to extend), 100%

Reporting to: Symphony IT Project Manager

Salary: MSF salaries are in the lower range of NGO salaries and vary according to the location of the position



Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 21 sections, 24 associations and other offices together. Based in Geneva, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF Movement, as well as implements international projects and initiatives as requested.


The management of its human resources is a key strategic element of the organization. In 2008 an ambitious international Human Resources Vision was formulated with a clear commitment to an international approach on HR which will allow best use of our resources for the people we work for in the field. Based on this vision various programs and initiatives were launched to achieve it. The Symphony Programme is one of those key projects with the objective of designing, customizing and rolling out Sap HCM as a common HR information system to 24 MSF offices worldwide.


During the project phase the Symphony Data Manager will be assigned to the Symphony Project team, reporting to the Symphony IT Project Manager.


The overall objective of this position is to build and maintain the jobs that will automate Data Quality and Data Migration activities and provide expertise on data related matters for the purpose of rolling out SAP HCM. Furthermore s/he will be responsible for the existence of the proper documentation regarding the SAP HCM database and also advise Systems Integrator, local IT teams and third parties with building the system’s interfaces.


The main responsibilities of the Symphony Data Manager will be to:

  • Assist in planning Data Quality and Data Migration activities in conjunction with the Systems Integrator and IT Project manager
  • Build an inventory of HR data in sections and its uses
  • Assess User needs related to data migration
  • Drive Data Quality activities
  • Build and maintain ETL jobs used in the project
  • Extract and Transform data during Data Migration and coordinate data load with the Systems Integrator
  • Support the Systems Integrator and local IT teams with building interfaces
  • Build and maintain complete database documentation


  • Degree in Information Technology or Human Resources
  • knowledge of HR data and processes
  • Strong understanding of database concepts and technology
  • At least a combined five (5) years work experience in IT and/or HR
  • At least  two (2) years’ experience working with common ETL and BI tools (Talend, Pentaho, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Query languages (SQL, Regex, etc.)
  • Fluent in English, French highly desirable, Spanish a plus
  • Previous experience in working on an HRMS migration a strong plus
