Contract: Full-time position – Long term contract

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 21 sections, 24 associations and other offices together. Based in Geneva, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF movement, and implements international projects and initiatives as requested.

MSF has produced medical practice guidelines for more than 25 years. These guidelines are mostly based on MSF field experience and scientific evidence and most of them target non-specialised staff. Their objective is to disseminate adapted and specialized knowledge to teams working in the field who are not specialized in the subject matter. MSF Guidelines can be produced at Operational Center (OC) (OC Guideline) level or may involve all MSF OCs, i.e. international guidelines (formerly called intersection Guidelines). The international guidelines may be for either MSF internal distribution (internal GL) or public diffusion (public GL).

Nowadays, there are 22 international MSF guides, 9 of which were selected for public distribution. Around 50 000 guides were distributed in 2014, 75% to external customers.

These customers (international agencies such as WHO, UNICEF or NGO’s) are working in the same medical environment as MSF, and so consider MSF as a reference in terms of medical and public health practices.

Translation is obviously a key issue and a very high responsibility considering the international coverage of the guidelines project. Previously the translations in English French and Spanish were performed by the guidelines team; and other translation in Arabic, Persian, and Russian were opportunistically performed with temporary staff.

The need of a full time professional translator is felt by the guidelines team regarding the number of the yearly production and demand from the field.
