Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 21 sections, 24 associations and other offices together. Based in Geneva, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF Movement, as well as implementing international projects and initiatives as requested.


The International  Content and Publications Manager (ICPM) reports to the International Communications Project Manager. He/she is part of the International Office communications team and is based in Geneva, Switzerland.

He/she will have regular contact and work in collaboration with communications staff in MSF sections.


The ICPM manages a team of two people and guarantees the production and quality of MSF International print and online publications and ensures they follow MSF International standards; ensures the editorial line of the websites correspond to the Movement’s communications priorities; ensures new web content is produced when needed; supports the writing of texts for MSF International (websites and other); supports senior International Office staff in preparation of articles and presentations; promotes the correct use of MSF’s brand and logo throughout the Movement; and works closely with other team members for the publication and dissemination of content. In addition, the ICPM contributes to all communications coming from the International Office ensuring editorial quality standards, relevance and accuracy.


Editorial management

  • Sets up and leads an editorial board for MSF International
  • Through this board, increases the quality of writing and editing for MSF International publications
  • Coordinates Movement-wide fora (such as the editors) with a view to stimulating both efficiency and quality in the production of MSF publications
  • Through the content team, maintains the international editorial guidelines in English and other languages used in publications produced by the International Office and the Movement

International Activity Report (IAR) and other publications

  • Proposes topics for inclusion in the IAR and assigns writers to them
  • Oversees the work of the Online and Content Editor who leads the annual IAR process
  • Safeguards the IAR’s accuracy, readability and relevance
  • Oversees the budget relating to the IAR
  • Works in close collaboration with the International Digital Communications Manager for the production and launch of the online versions of the IAR
  • Plans, budgets, produces, edits and proofreads any other print publications issued by the International Office (or delegates as required)

Content creation

  • Oversees the production of relevant and timely content for the English and Arabic websites (static pages, disease and medical pages, and others)
  • Oversees the production, and regular updates, of texts that introduce MSF, as well as (medical) topics. These pages are for use by by both field missions and MSF offices.
  • Works closely with the International Office communications digital team to obtain feedback on best practices for online publication.
  • Works closely with operational communications staff in headquarters and the field to ensure correct and up-to-date information relating to priority topics, emergencies and crises is available on

Editorial support for senior International Office staff

  • When needed supports senior staff in the International Office by editing and proofreading texts for external audiences
  • When needed proofreads texts (such as public speeches) on behalf of the International President of MSF, in collaboration with the Special Assistant to the International President on Public Positioning

Brand management

  • Issue and review guidelines for the use of the MSF logo and branding
  • Advise MSF offices and missions on logo and branding issues, with the aim of safeguarding consistency
  • Flag inconsistencies in MSF branding and propose corrective measures where appropriate

Internal communications

  • Supports senior International Office staff in the production of high-quality internal information products
  • Oversees the development of the Communications Index with the Online and Content Editor and shares the rough outcomes of selected communications initiatives to the International Office Communications team for collective analysis.


  • Manages a team made up of the Online and Content Editor, and the Arabic Web Project Officer, and helps them set priorities
  • Provides support and ensures timely strategies are produced for (including dissemination) in collaboration with the Digital Manager
  • Performs administrative and HR duties related to the managerial side of the position (appraisal of staff, setting objectives, etc.)
  • Manages budgets related to above projects and takes part in the yearly budgeting process

Other tasks

  • When needed supports the team with website publishing tasks and/or social media postings
  • Takes part in weekend on-call duties
  • Manages projects or dossiers delegated by the International Communications Coordinator and/or the International Communications Project Manager
  • May be asked to travel to the field to support communications staff.


Qualifications and work experience

  • Graduate with relevant degree
  • Experience of managing complex publications, in print and/or online
  • Minimum of five years editing and proofing experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of management experience
  • Experience with MSF or other NGO is a significant asset

Specific requirements

  • Genuine interest in, and commitment to, the humanitarian principles of MSF
  • Native English speaker or functions at this level
  • Demonstrable interest in digital and media work
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Good eye for design
  • Passionate about language
  • Outstanding organisational skills with the ability to handle large volumes of work, and track multiple projects or activities at any one time
  • Self-driven with the ability to take initiative
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships
  • Experience in SEO/web writing an asset
