Laos: Expanding AIDS care

MSF initially focused its efforts on prevention, home-based care and treatment of opportunistic infections. However, in June 2003, the Laotian government authorized MSF to import antiretroviral (ARV) medicines. In September 2003, the first patient in Laos was treated with ARVs. By the middle of 2004, 110 patients were receiving these medicines. With the goal of adding 12 new patients a month, the MSF team hopes to treat 170 people with ARVs by the end of 2004. MSF has worked in the Lao People's Democratic Republic since 1997. International Staff: 8 National Staff: 26
