Turkmenistan: New TB programme
MSF's Aral Sea programme started in Uzbekistan. The programme is now being expanded to cover isolated communities living in three of the former Soviet oblasts in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
In May 1999, MSF launched a tuberculosis programme in Turkmenistan. The pilot programme in the former Soviet oblast of Dashouwuz to treat tuberculosis using the DOTS (directly observed therapy short course) method is running smoothly and the team was able to put to good use the lessons learned in a similar programme in the Uzbek oblast of Karakalpakstan.
Dashouwuz is inhabited by 200,000 people. A representation office will be opened in Aschabad with possible logistics support for the region.
