Photo of the Week: Vaccination in Masisi, Eastern DRC

In August 2014, the Masisi team undertook a challenging vaccination campaign in remote mountainous villages in an area that has no health coverage at all. At least two rebel groups, and frequent Congolese army presence, make this an area of periodic intense conflict. The population are scared to walk to reach markets or healthcare. Fifty porters were needed to carry the cool boxes and all the necessary equipment to undertake four days of vaccinations. The campaign involved six days of walking from village to village, often in torrential rain. A total of 4,054 children and pregnant women were vaccinated against a wide range of diseases.  The following vaccines were administered: measles, yellow fever, DTP + HBV + Hib, PCV13, and tetanus for pregnant women.
