Photo of the Week: TB in Eastern Ukraine
Tuberculosis (TB) is a big problem in eastern Ukraine, especially in prisons. The official death rate from TB in Ukraine is 15 per 100,000 people, but amongst prisoners it is ten times higher. MSF has been working in pre-detention centres and prisons in the Donetsk region since 2011, focusing on multidrug-resistant strains of the disease (MDR-TB), because the treatment requires a lot of expensive drugs that many countries cannot afford. MSF has currently 170 patients under treatment, in five pre-detention centres and prisons in Mariupol, Artemovsk, Dnepropetrovsk, Dzhanivka and Donetsk.
